In my time as a gamer and hardware enthusiast there were very few occasions when I was really overwhelmed with what a product could do. May it be performance or the ability to customize it to your hearts contempt, there are very few products which attacked me with so many options like the Cyborg R.A.T. 9 gaming mouse.
Cyborg is part of the San Diego based Mad Catz company, which specializes in developing and producing items destined for consoles or PCs. The brand is part of their hardcore gaming sector and a while back we’ve gotten the chance to enjoy their Cyborg R.A.T. 7 gaming mouse and although I didn’t think they could do better than that, I’m glad that they’ve proven me wrong.
The Cyborg R.A.T. 9 is basically built around the R.A.T. 7 but comes with a wireless emitter, so the annoying cable is dropped in this version of the mouse. However, underneath it all we still have the mighty 5600dpi sensor. When it comes to customizing your gear, the R.A.T. 7 managed to give a few lessons to some of the biggest manufacturer’s out there, yet the R.A.T. 9 still manages to add new features.
Cyborg’s R.A.T. 9 comes with 2.4 GHz wireless technology, allowing for an unbelievable 1ms response time. The wireless receiver acts as a recharge dock and the company supplies you with 2 batteries for your mouse, so you can game without interruptions. The average charge time for a battery is around 1 hour and the “life expectancy” under heavy gaming conditions for one of those charges is 9 hours. This should keep you gaming around the clock without interruptions.
The Cyborg gaming mouse also comes with 3 different palm rests which allow you to customize it to fit your grip the best. Personally, as I am using the finger grip, I found the smallest of the bunch the best. You also get 3 different pinkie grips, which allow you to customize that as well and in this case I went for the smallest as well.
You can also adjust the length of the device or you can also adjust the thumb panel itself by either moving it up or down and if you still aren’t satisfied, the thumb rest can also pivot outwards. My personal choice made the thumb rest stick to the overall mouse and push it all the way to the front, allowing easy access to the thumb buttons.
If this wasn’t enough, the software allows you to set up 4 custom DPI settings, setup Precision Aim Mode, which sets the mouse sensitivity to a lower value when you need that perfect control. However, I found this function rather useless, as I like to have always a constant sensitivity setting and let my hand do the work.
And we are still not done with all the features, as the mouse offers you 5 programmable buttons and you also get 3 Cyborg Modes, which allow you to switch between 3 individual R.A.T. modes with a single press of a button.
After all of this customization, you might think that the Cyborg R.A.T. 9 feels flimsy, yet that is far from the truth as the mouse is as solid as a rock. Build quality is excellent and even under stressful conditions, the engine inside delivers extreme precision and control over all your actions. My only beef in terms of performance would be regarding the left button which feels a touch soft and may be pressed by accident at times, but other than that, it’s a jewel.
Considering the huge array of customization options you can go for, you can never say that a R.A.T. 9 doesn’t fit your hand or leaves you with pains as you can set it up for your own personal user. Although it might take time in the beginning to get used to it, once you’ve gotten the hang of it, you’ll be fraging opponents and controlling units in no time.
The software aspect of the Cyborg R.A.T. 9 also gives you a helping hand in achieving excellent kill per death ratios. You get access to all the essential components within just a few clicks and thanks to the tons of options this provides you with as well, even the season veteran will find his or her perfect settings.
Pricing
The Cyborg R.A.T. 9 goes for $149.99 on Gameshark and you can get there via the company’s page or if you choose another retailer like Amazon, you can pick up the R.A.T. 9 for $129.99. Note that the mouse is compatible with Mac as well, so none of you fine folks is left out of the equation.
Final thoughts
All in all, the Cyborg R.A.T. 9 has something for every user. With a wide array of customization options as well as excellent build quality, the R.A.T. 9 can help you score those essential frags within seconds of entering a server. Build quality is good and the software side helps you out a great deal as well. The one thing which might drive you away would be the rather large price tag, specially that the Logitech G300 is well on its way. Stay tuned for more!
